CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
IN COMPLEX SYSTEMS

Through a six-month investigation of community development initiatives in Haiti, we documented innovative strategies and participatory models emerging on the ground, reworked our understanding of social impact and developed a new process for collaboration in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.

REDEFINING IMPACT OVER TIME

We define impact as the ability to establish and maintain new social and economic standards over time.

Traditional program evaluations often rely on quantitative models that simply validate existing systems.
By measuring and understanding strategies instead of fixed outcomes, we focus on the big picture of
how people reshape environments, actions, and mindsets to develop and achieve new standards.

COPING WITH COMPLEXITY THROUGH SYSTEM AND STRATEGY

We highlight strategies as a guide for other groups and communities through an analytical framework based on mapping and analyzing complex systems.

Through a systemic approach, we retrace and examine specific challenges that have negative effects on
human development. Our technique consists of identifying a set of relevant conditions and developing
an internal logic that unlocks pathways to achieve system-level impact.

RECOGNIZING THE POWER OF MAPPING

We rely equally on visual mapping and traditional narrative to uncover effective
strategies that may otherwise remain inaccessible to the outside observer.

Observing and mapping the unspoken is critical to our work. We are sensitive to how behaviors
and actions express what can go undocumented by spoken or written language. Stepping away
from conventional quantitative models, we developed a robust methodology based on system
and behavior mapping.

IMPROVING COLLABORATION IN MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ENVIRONMENTS

SHIFT introduces additional partners into the design process through an adaptive model that acts as a springboard to social innovation.

Most current design and development models dissociate people from the programs, services, and products
they use every day. Human-Centered Design practices bring traditionally ignored groups into the design process
and reposition users as designers. We innovated on top of current HCD models to create SHIFT, a platform for
collaborative problem solving in multi-stakeholder environments.

HOW INCUBATION LEADS TO INNOVATION

We developed Global Focus: Haiti within flexible parameters that offered promising
outcomes from the outset but did not dictate the results.
